PostHeaderIcon What’s The Best Kind Of Soil To Use For Vegetables?

We have a small garden in our backyard in Wichita, KS and we plan on planting bell peppers and lettuce. Is there a recommended soil that we should use?
Any gardening advice is welcome, as this is our first time!

PostHeaderIcon What Is The Best Smoker?

I am looking for a smoker as a present. I would like something that has a vertical design with a door that opens similar to a refrigerator. I really like this Bradley smoker http://www.amazon.com/Bradley-BTIS1-Orig… but am looking for something about half the price. The person I’m buying it for is not sure if he’s loves to smoke but would like to try it out so about $150 would be my top end. Something that is electric would be preferable (ie lazy-Q). If you have personal experience that you could share that would be great. Alternatively a link to a site with some reviews.
Thank you!

PostHeaderIcon What The Best Gift You Have Ever Recieved And Or Given? (not Romantic. For Family Members)?

I have no idea what to get my mom or dad for christmas.
if this helps:
My mom like gardening, pretty things and cooking. shes somewhat spiritual and is an herbalist.
My dad is a nature person too. Loves the out doors. Very practical person.
think a little more then “get your mom gardening gloves and a basket with seeds and tools” and “get your dad a hiking stick” or things along thoes lines. Last year I got my mom a copper heart wind chime from gaiam and my dad a cherry pit neck pillow that you can heat in the microwave.

PostHeaderIcon How Do I Get The Best Results Out Of A Wood Fired Kiln?

I have good white box wood available to me to fire my kiln which is the best design to build for wood fired kiln. also is it possible to use clay as a morter for laying the bricks to build the kiln should i add anything to the clay for this purpose. The clay available to me is out of my garden and its is beige in color and is very plastic. does not seem to have any large materials incorporated in it. in general it seems like a natural potters clay, i feel i could throw this clay straight out of the ground, it is very fine and very plastic for the want of a better description. any help would be greatly appreciated. PostHeaderIcon What Would Be The Best Material For A Blade?

i know this question is thrown around a lot, but i need a straight answer. im doing a mechanical engineering course, and i want to design and build a collapsible machete. forget about the collapsible part, if one were building a war machete, not a “hack the brambles in my garden” one, and an unlimited budget, what would be the best for chip resistance and sharpness retention,
a tungsten carbide edge and spring steel centre?that’ss most likely too brittle; steel coated in boron nitride? i want it to be as sharp as possible. like “cut a silk cloth under its own weight” sharp.
any ideas welcome :)

PostHeaderIcon Omg You Have To Read This, This Is The Best Story Eva!!!?

Hi, sorry about the title, but i had to get your attention didn’t i???
i mean, last time i posted a similar question i got no responses
so here goes,
what do you think of my story, i know there is a million questions asking this, but i really need opinions.
by the way i’m 13
here it is…
Our house sat on the very middle of a huge hill, our property stretched on at about a 50metre radius from our house. Our house was old, one of the houses you might have recognised if you came from the year 2000. It was a 2-storey weatherboard farmhouse. The curtains of the smallest upstairs bedroom were hanging out the window letting the wind blow them across till they almost touched the end of the house. I looked back at it, then on towards the small wooden garden shed down the path.
As I neared my destination I heard shuffling footsteps and whispers coming from the shed. I rapped the secret knock,.
The door swung open and the grinning face of my best friend, Jasmine, greeted me, I walked in and took my position on top of an old suitcase. Her twin brother Spencer was sitting cross-legged on a bag of fertiliser, flipping through a Car magazine and Sam was reclining against the wall , his dark chocolate brown hair blowing around from the breeze, making its way through a gap between 2 boards behind him
“Hey Spence, chuck us an oreo?”
Spencer rummaged in a decorated wooden box (Jaz and I made it in woodwork at school)) we kept hidden under a loose floorboard. He found the packet of Oreos amoungst goodies and quite forcefully threw me one, I wasn’t quite expecting it, and it hit me in the face, it was only a biscuit, but Spencer looked shocked that he’d hurt me.
“It’s ok Spence, I’m a bad catch” seeing his confused look I corrected myself “ I’m not very good at catching”
He didn’t reply, he was always shy when we all met up. Jaz smiled at me as though to say, he’ll be right. I knew he would, there’d been a million other awkward moments like these, I guess that’s what’s to be expected when your best friends brother has aspergers, specially when he fancies you.
“Where’s Toby??” I asked quizzically
“He had soccer practice” Sam answered
“Oh” I sighed, looking up out the windows onto the rolling hills, covered in towering skyscrapers and towers, which stretched on as far as I could see.
“So what’s up Jaz? I’ve gotta get back soon, mum and dad are going out and I have to look after Meg”
“uhh Liv?” Jaz said slowly, looking rather awkward
“What?” I replied, sensing something was wrong
“We’re moving”
My heart sunk, I thought it would sink down to my feet, my first best friend, my only best friend, was moving.
“Its only an hour away, you can come and visit in the hollidays and on the weekends, and I can come and visit you” Jaz added, moving towards me
“Why?” was all I could manage to choke out, tears streaming down my red face
“Well Dads a Space engineer, he got a job working on the new space crafts they’re designing, you know to take us to Mars”
I took a deep breath, I knew Mr Makenzie had a very important job, I knew that they had to design spacecrafts that could take people to mars, I knew earth was almost polluted beyond repair.
After a while I calmed down.
“I’ve gotta go” I told them and closed the door quietly behind me, I didn’t have the strength to slam it, despite the sadness and anger that was making me tremble from head to toe.
I walked back up the paved path to the house and saw my sister playing in the yard, she was 6 and people said, if we were the same age we’d have looked like twins, we had the same wavy dark brown hair, the same piercing blue eyes, even the same dimples when we smiled.
I swung the kitchen door open and found mum and Dad reading a letter at the bench. I looked over Dads shoulder and read the words that would change my life for ever.

PostHeaderIcon What Would Be The Best Location To Plant Veggies And Herbs?

Okay at school we have a small plot in the back for a butterfly garden that we are going to create tomorrow. My teacher bought veggies, herbs and only flowers that are suppose to attract butterflies. So tomorrow we are going to design it and apparently plant it. I thought we were going to take more time to actually plan the layout of the garden but looks like we are just going to dig in. So I want quickly gather some information on what would possible be the most beneficial layout (I don’t know if herbs would be better next to the veggies or the veggies next to the flowers whatnot). So hopefully this small research will be helpful tomorrow when a bunch of kids show up ready to get their hands dirty (all I can think of is chaos ::shivers::). SO absolutely any help would be fantastic!

For example one day i’d like to cycle across europe is it better to do these sorts of things when your young (i’m 27) or have them to look foward to in later life. It would be nice to think in later life ‘oh i’ve done that whats next’ or would it be depressing because i’d done evrything.? Some advice from an older person would be appreciated.
Other things i want to do is have my own vege garden, get into astronomy and maybe emigrate to canada as well as learn french.

PostHeaderIcon What’s The Best Way To Introduce A Kitten To The Outdoors/other Cats?

We’ve just moved home & have a private garden & I’m wondering what tips you could give me on making the move to the outside as least stressful as possible for Dex (the kitty). He hasn’t been outside before. Plus, we know there are at least two other cats. One lives next door & sometimes sits outside our cat flap growling at Dex!
